Virgin Gorda
Day 25

The trade winds are back! Not as brisk or steady as before, but still, they're blowing out of the south again and cooling things off a bit. Nevertheless, we decided to hang around the Pink House and avoid the sun for another day until they were back in force. After living in the house for nearly a month, there were a few minor repairs that needed to be done, and we thought we'd help out the owner a bit and do some of them instead of just sitting around. By this time, Kathy and I had read all the books we'd brought with us and a couple more we'd bought locally (one of which was called "Sunfun Calypso," a novel about living and working on a fictitious Caribbean island that sounds suspiciously like Tortola).

Kathy caught up on chores and helped me repair a window crank and replace a broken islet on one of the fishing rods. I also fixed the broken wind chimes, thinking that maybe that was the reason the trades had deserted us for a few days. Mostly though, we worked on our tans. There are a lot of advantages to living someplace where there are no other humans for miles around, and the thoroughness of our tans is one of them.

Late in the afternoon, the water was crystal clear, and a Spotted Eagle Ray gave us an amazing show, flying through the water directly under the back porch. At one point, he came completely out of the water, making a gigantic splash that sounded like a thunderclap. For dinner, we had grilled Kielbasa on ziti with diced Italian tomatoes and peach coladas. It had been a relaxing, laid back, kind of day, but we're never bored here, even with no TV or radio. You just have to look up occasionally to see a sailboat sailing by in the sapphire Caribbean just beyond our own private reef to be thoroughly entertained and completely happy.
