Virgin Gorda
Day 3

We had been on the island for a full day now and hadn't yet gotten in the water. After spending the morning laying around on the deck and reading, we packed the snorkel equipment and drove the jeep down the trail a bit to check out the Avon boat and take a swim. The swim ended up lasting more than two hours. We snorkeled over toward Hurricane Hole to check out a couple of floats we could see from the house. The floats were attached to two big fish traps on the bottom, and one of them had caught a large Grey Snapper. Kathy wanted to snag the fish for dinner somehow, but she couldn't come up with a way to get it out of the trap without destroying it and/or losing the fish. I was just afraid that whoever put the trap there would probably want his fish back. So we left it there and swam back over toward the Pink House. Some of the most beautiful reefs and fish are just off Mattie Point, which is the little point of land on which the house sits. While checking out another fish trap in that area, we saw a strange outline in the sand next to the trap. When the outline moved, we saw it was a gigantic Stingray with a wing span of three or four feet and a snake-like tail that must have been five feet long. We both made the silent decision to make our way back to the beach and call it a day. Kathy saw another big ray, even bigger that the first one, lying on the bottom. She said it was looking at her, and so she made pretty good time getting out of the water after that.

Night happens suddenly here at about 7:30pm when the sun falls behind Gorda Peak. We grilled Caribbean spiced pork chops outside and ate them with white rice and Cuba Libres while watching millions of stars, including a couple of falling ones. Overall, it was a pretty restful day.
