This is our room in the Wedgewood Inn, a B&B on Cape Cod. It's the first time we stayed in a real Bed and Breakfast which was essentially somebody's house. Frankly, it took some getting used to. We really prefer not to have to sync our schedules with somebody else's while we're on vacation. That's kind of the point, right? Nevertheless, the house was cozy and nice.

That's Lake Champlain shrouded in mist on a really cold New Year's Day. The night before it got down to four degrees below zero. On New Year's Eve we walked around the town square in Burlington, Vermont and enjoyed what they call the First Night celebration. We ended up at a pub where a local Irish band played the pipes until dawn, then walked back to the hotel to thaw our eyebrows.

This old hotel is on Mt. Washington. We spotted it from the highway and drove up to see if we could get a room for the night. Unfortunately, the thing is completely vacant. You can't tell from the picture, but up close it was like a spooky old ghost hotel in the middle of a winter paradise.

Kathy insisted we stop at a frozen pond to skate. This despite the fact that neither of us knew how to skate. We sat by the fire to strap on the blades and then jumped off onto the ice. As you might expect, we spent more time on our butts than on the skates.

I look calm here don't I? Fact is, I almost died just before this was snapped. We were merrily hiking along the trail when I looked down to find I had taken two steps out onto that patch of ice you see behind me. What you can't see is the sheer drop off to the right that ends in a frozen river.

And this is that very frozen river. Pretty, but you don't want to be swimming in it. This hike through the White Mountain National Forest was breathtaking. And you could actually see your breath being taken.
